So I'm weird, but if you follow me then you already knew that. Recently I found this old six part series of hentai movies called Urotsukidoji released between 1987 and 2002, and it had a profound impact on me and my goals on this platform and this particular medium.

The first (and really the only worthwhile) one is subtitled Legend of the Overfiend. It's this amazing blend of horror, thriller, action, and erotica that has no equal in the realm of live action. In terms of sheer spectacle and audacity alone, it blows away films like Bram Stoker's Dracula, Species, and the Hellraiser franchise. To describe the plot simply, it's a film about the end of the world. A pair of half-demons are running out of time searching for the Overfiend - a powerful being that will bring about a new world. They're so focused on finding this one thing they believe will change everything for the better, they don't stop to think about how a new world would have to come about. The film takes place in Osaka, Japan which is a land of contrasts. Simultaneously one of the oldest cities in the country, filled with ancient beauty and culture that has been maintained for centuries while being surrounded by incredibly modern and high tech buildings and clubs, complete with yakuza and an underground BDSM scene. In the film, demons are crawling around every corner causing mayhem and taking advantage of this environment. There's not much more I can say without spoiling it for you. There's a shortened dub of it that I don't recommend watching. It has actually had quite an influence on not only Japanese filmmakers, but European filmmakers as well when it became part of the video nasty's. Christophe Gans actually cited it as an influence on the climax of his excellent Silent Hill film adaptation. Like I said, there are five sequels, but none of them come close to being as good as the first one so I'll skip talking about them here.

So about the original manga author, Toshio Maeda. He's written some other mangas that have been adapted into hentai movies/series including La Blue Girl, Demon Beast Invasion, and Demon Warrior Koji. All the examples I just mentioned reached some level of acclaim as being among the best examples of the genre. So what was it about Toshio Maeda that made his work stand out so much? There was (and still is) a lot of restriction on what can be published for mainstream audiences. Hentai, however, doesn't have this barrier. For him, he saw hentai as a way to tell compelling stories that couldn't be told in another medium. The clash of sex and horror in Legend of the Overfiend not only created some truly profound images, but explored how they tied together with larger themes such as power, money, and influence.

Watching his work and considering the advancements in and demands for better adult entertainment, it struck me that this is something I want to set out to do. Down the line, I would love to make short or even feature length films that are still as explicit and erotic as what you want, but it would be part of something greater with genuine production value, with characters and a story that grip you. It doesn't necessarily even have to be an erotic horror or thriller (although I would very much like for it to be), so I could make a romantic comedy or a romantic drama, but with real sex scenes. Hell, I could even make something that just has a romance subplot in it and still make time in the story to give you the goods.
