With the iconic line, "we're all mad here", Cheshire was thought to represent the plight of the mentally ill and homeless during the authors time. The character is relatable to all. I remember being so very frustrated when watching the movie and hearing how the cat talked to Alice. Why wouldn't he just speak in complete sentences?, I wondered. Just tell her! I thought. But, when it comes to sexuality, sometimes the words needed don't form as well as they should. Sometimes voicing our deepest, darkest, fantasies and secrets will leave us stuttering. Why? Because our most inner self wants to be accepted, appreciated and valued. And when we think of our sexuality, is that not what we desire there as well? So we hesitate and "feel out" our partners. We broach subjects over wine, with throwaway comments. We don't voice our deepest fantasies, because if they reject that, they will be rejecting the very core of us. So how do we solve this? We recognize that every single person has sexual fantasies, desires, wants and needs. And when we get with that person, we make an important and continuous effort not just to ask our partner about their fantasies, but to actually listen. If your partner tells you a sexual fantasy, ask them, how would that make you feel? Would you want to feel vulnerable, used, empowered, slutty, virile, or strong? Sometimes knowing the desired outcome can give you good information on the fantasy it will take to get there. Ask for details, encourage your partner, and keep an open mind. We all have a sexual journey, and we are definitely, definitely all mad here. ;)
