This type of corset was a tight, elongated bodice that was worn underneath clothing. The women of the French court saw it as "indispensable to the beauty of the female figure." The corsets turned the upper torso into a matching but inverted hour glass shape. The intense tight-lacing that is seen in later centuries was not possible at this time, as the holes through which the laces were threaded were sewn by hand, and would tear if put under strain. Therefore the emphasis was less on the smallness of the waist but rather the contrast between the flatness of the bodice front and the curving tops of the breasts peeking over the top. These corsets were typically made out of layered fabric, stiffened with glue, and were tightly laced. Today, women are still using corsets to enhance the appearance of their bodies shape, though now they are designed more practically which has evolved them from a hidden undergarment into a mainstream fashion trend worn above clothing or with nothing els at all...like this :) Thanks for reading!
