I went to an ikebana event today. I watched a live demonstration of flower arrangements, and it made me want to pick up another hobby! Too bad flowers are so expensive, and I don't have anyone to get them for me. Have you ever heard of ikebana? It’s the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement that dates back to the 6th century. Initially tied to Buddhist rituals of offering flowers to the dead, ikebana evolved over time into a refined art form. Unlike Western floral designs that highlight the bloom, ikebana emphasizes harmony, balance, and the relationship between the flowers and their surroundings. Rooted in Zen Buddhist principles, each element in an ikebana arrangement—whether a flower, stem, or branch—is placed with intention, conveying nature’s beauty and the artist’s emotional expression. The arrangement often embraces asymmetry and simplicity, with space being just as important as the flowers themselves. There are various schools of ikebana, like Ikenobo, which follows a more traditional style, and Sogetsu, known for encouraging creative freedom. Despite its minimalist appearance, ikebana is a powerful form of expression, evoking a deep sense of peace and balance. My current traditional hobbies are buying and wearing kimono, practicing Japanese tea ceremony, and drinking sake—specifically most brands that offer Daiginjo. Ikebana feels like a natural extension of these passions, allowing me to further connect with my culture.
