wow the history of sufganiyot aka jelly donuts is fascinating. why do we eat them on hanukkah? cuz they're oily and it's traditional to eat shit like that to celebrate the miracle of the oil. SO. in 1485 a cookbook in Germany called the Kuchenmeisterei published the recipe for jelly donuts. It didn't start with a hole - it was just a pocket of dough with jelly and fried in lard. It was expensive to make and didn't gain popularity until two major events happened in the 1500s. 1. The german cookbook with the original recipe was translated into Polish and within the century jelly donuts began to be known as "packzi" and served on Christmas, Hanukkah, and other special holidays. In Yiddish they're pronounced ponchiks, and if they don't have a filling it's called "donats!" Woah! So Donut is a Yiddish word?? 2. The cost of sugar went down because slave-produced sugar in the Caribbean went up. WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
