Gear! The most overwhelming part of the decision to hike the Appalachian Trail so far has been gear. Cost, weight, capacity, ease of use. I’m fortunate in that two new friends Sam and Jake, both experienced outdoorsmen, have offered guidance and their knowledge on what to get and use. I went window shopping at REI and sent Sam the two pictures of walls of options just saying, “everything seems virtually the same with nuanced differences that won’t mean anything to most people!”

On that note, I’m excited to learn about those nuances and figure out what are the best items for me.
