Legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman was embraced by ☠ in 2007 at 89 years old. Hailing from Sweden, his esoteric films garnered attention internationally for the way they blended a classic movie feel with modern techniques while exploring a wide range of emotional themes across the human condition.
One of his most famous works, from 1957, was The Seventh Seal, which features a knight engaged in a chess game with Death himself, all while navigating his duties to his people as a plague rages on. Making moves as he chats with the supernatural entity in brief breaks from his journey where he encounters a traveling acting troupe, the knight, accompanied by his squire, must make life-or-death decisions at every turn, though often not regarding his own.
As a tribute to this filmmaker that I’m only beginning to get to know, I embodied his rendition of Death, chess game and all, with a titillating twist.

At a Soviet research station in Vostok, Antarctica, in 1983, the temperature dipped down to -128.6°F in the air above the ground. This is significant because satellites have recorded temperatures as low as -134°F, but those were for the ground itself, so the record still stands.

In New Mexico, in 1945, the atmosphere (and world) was changed forever when the first ever nuclear explosion occurred in New Mexico. Named “Trinity”, this test used plutonium implosion to release 18.6 kilotons of power witnessed upwards of 200 miles away. The true source of the blast was kept secret even from military personnel until after the nuclear attack on Hiroshima exactly three weeks later.
The implications of nuclear warheads have been incredibly widespread, from the destruction and death in Japan and the Cold War to radioactive carbon dating having to be completely reconfigured. Regardless of the morality of such a device, the extreme power and intensity of these explosions is unlike any other force made by man.

On this Day in History:
Having become unified as a Kingdom in 1795, Hawai’i was first settled upwards of 600 years prior by Polynesians. The Kingdom greatly valued education and health, and had a progressive constitutional monarchy with said monarch serving as the President, leading to compulsory education for all citizens 77 years before the United States. They also had universal free healthcare for all citizens by 1859, with many Nordic countries following suit.
This all changed when the United States took an imperialist interest in Hawai’i and ultimately took the Kingdom by force. These interests varied from sugar and fruit plantations to a mid-Pacific port to those of missionaries. While this occupation and eventual integration was much less violent than many other government occupations, the effects on the Hawaiian people was significant. 126 years after the official annexation native Hawaiians are the most at-risk for health problems and amongst the most poverty-stricken, with education following similar lines.
The stories of US imperialism are hardly ever good for the native people, and Hawai’i is no exception; it’s important to pay attention to the actions of governments and shine light on the groups that have been disenfranchised of their own land and government. I’d like to do that by showing a piece of Hawaiian culture with this message as best as I can, so please enjoy my tutorial on how to tie a Hawaiian malo.

On this Day in History:
In 1986 a historic court case was decided by the Supreme Court: Bowers v. Hardwick ruled that homosexual sodomy is not a fundamental right, and states were deemed to have the right to criminalize it so long as the statute or ordinance doing so has a rational reason that the law protects state interests.
