The underhand bench press is nothing new. You will ultimately work the upper chest, biceps, triceps, and some front shoulders during this exercise. However, for me, I like to perform this exercise in an unorthodox way at times. In these photos and (video), I will explain the difference. You can obviously see there is a difference if you look closely:
#1 is more of the traditional way of doing the underhand bench press. You are actually “ pushing “ the weight away from your body, just as you do with the traditional bench press.
#2 is the unorthodox way that I prefer. Performing the exercise with this form (bar lower) towards waist; requires more of a pulling motion initially. Up, and towards your head. It works less triceps, but more upper chest when performed properly.
take note of the “ light “ weight utilized during this exercise. You want to focus on activating that upper chest more than anything. Using lighter weight allows you to stick to proper form, and concentrate on what muscles you need to activate throughout the exercise.
